If you agree that there are really two Halloweens – the traditional kids trick or treating with parents chaperoning or manning the candy stations being one and the adult social that is the modern equivalent of a masked ball being the other, then here are some tips on planning the latter version.

First thing is to clearly delineate that you are having an event for grown-ups, if that is your intent. It’s just like any other social gathering you may be having, where your friends will appreciate being informed about the nature of the party. Generally, if your affair includes parents of young children, it is probably best to avoid scheduling it on Halloween itself, because first and foremost the day is one of family participation. Look at a weekend night if it is a day or two in either direction of Halloween.

Next, try to get invitations out two-three weeks ahead of time to give people time to figure out what costumes they are going to wear and purchase or create them. Most card shops carry inexpensive invite packs, and there are several online services that will help you create an interesting and visually appealing invitation to email to your guest list.

You will probably want to create a theme for the party. The typical Halloween “atmosphere” is easily created: large fake spider webs, and big black spiders, ghostly fixtures, Styrofoam tombstones and the like. Materials for these are easily acquired online and/ or from local crafts and hardware stores. You can also find plenty of “scary stuff” and one of the many specialty Halloween retailers who pop-up in September and October.
